Bob Huggins: Smothering Pressure Defense - Dominating the Box
Price:
$39.95
with Bob Huggins,
Kansas State University Head Coach;
over 500 career wins

Coach Huggins' teams are known for their aggressive, no nonsense approach to playing the game. This DVD focuses on pressure defense and how Huggins' teams have always thrived on pressuring the opponent. Pressure defense starts with an emphasis on guarding the ball, steering the ball and putting the ball in areas for trapping purposes. The box theory states that the ball is pushed to a side, therefore making the size of the box smaller. The smaller the box, the less area there is to defend. The middle lane of the floor is known as "the Shoot." It is extremely important that the defense keeps the ball out of this area of the floor. Once the offense gets it in the middle, all players are one pass away. Another major part of this defensive philosophy is creating pressure by playing on the line of the ball. Huggins teaches his players to make passes go "over or under" you but never through you. Defending the dribble and playing one pass away are necessary fundamentals in this system. The 2-on-2 Sprint to Help Drill incorporates many of the important teaching points, including high hands, spacing and angles and the closeout. The drills and teaching points in this DVD are the foundation of Coach Huggins defensive system. Dominating the box will help your team force turnovers and eliminate direct passes and easy shots. By employing this system pressure becomes your ally and a threat to any opponent on your schedule.

Bob Huggins: 10 Strategies for Guarding Your Opponent's Best Plays
Price:

Item Number: BD-02772

with Bob Huggins,
University of West Virginia Head Coach;
former Kansas State University Head Coach

A change from a flat triangle theory of defense to an "On Line, Up Line" philosophy has been key to Coach Huggins' defensive productivity. His new philosophy says the offense can throw it over you but not through you, meaning his defenders are directly in the passing lane. This forces the offense to catch the ball further from the basket and out of prime scoring areas. By pushing them out from the basket, passes become longer and more difficult for the offense to make. Ball screens and back screens are two of the games best offensive weapons, and Huggins breaks down his views on how his teams stop each. Core defensive skills are shared in the drills on this DVD; positioning, helping, closing out, pushing the ball out, guarding back cuts, back screens, and down screens are all covered. Excellent defensive instruction from one of the best in the game!

Bob Huggins' zone offense attacks the most vulnerable area on the floor: the high post. This offense uses the "dive and fill" concept to make the guts of the zone work. In this on the floor clinic setting, Coach Huggins uses four players to demonstrate the basic action of the offense. Primary areas of the floor used are the high post, short corner and wings. A key point for the high post player is to gain position under the guard. When the ball gets to this area, the offense has a 3-on-2 advantage. The basic alignment is a 2-1-2 set with the best, most active player in the high post. With great detail, Huggins shows the three-man rotation along the baseline when the ball is reversed. This is an excellent feature of the offense because it frees a 3-point shooter in the corners. Huggins demonstrates two options to get the ball into the high post or to an open shooter on the opposite wing, as well as how to create space for a lob at the rim. Once the action becomes 5-on-5, Huggins shows how to create mismatches against the zone. Options covered include the ball screen, the dribble pull (which opens the corner for the best shooter) and a corner action.

Full Court 1-3-1 Trapping Defense

West Virginia University Head Coach;
Conference USA "Coach of the Decade"

Coach Huggins' defense was created out of necessity early in his career and has been a part of his program everyday. Introduction to this defense begins with player-by-player assignments and coverage. The basic goal is to divide the court in half from basket to basket. Once the ball is on one side, the defense keeps it on that side. Ball pressure makes a big difference, keeping the offensive player from throwing skip passes and reversing the ball. To show the slides, a 5-on-5 zone shell drill is demonstrated. Huggins then moves the zone press up the floor, making it a full court attack. Once the ball is inbounds, keeping it in the box in the backcourt is important. Players away from the ball are on the line and up the line, in a direct line between the ball and the player in their area. Two methods of playing this full court trap include regular and a "speed them up" approach. Players are either trapping, anticipating, or protecting the goal. Each duty is broken down into several teaching points.

Cut & Fill Motion Offense

University of West Virginia Head Coach;
Conference USA "Coach of the Decade" (Cincinnati)

Coach Huggins' motion offense is based on cutting, reading the defense and back doors. He begins by using cones on the floor to illustrate the basic alignment of his motion offense. Huggins uses cutting drills and breakdown drills to teach the three major components of the offense: spreading, moving and isolating the offense. Huggins takes players through a five man cutting structure to put the offense together. When screeners call out screens, the cutter makes an intentional movement to get open. Demonstrated are on-ball and off-ball screening situations to give this offense spacing and variety, making it difficult to defend. Huggins provides everything you need to install this slashing offense.
