In this instructional DVD, Coach Hewitt introduces you to his innovative 3-2 "Point Zone Defense" - the same zone defense Hewitt used to shut down offenses in the Yellow Jackets 2004 run to the national title game! Hewitt begins by giving each defensive player an assignment and demonstrates the defensive responsibilities that allow the zone to run effectively. It starts out as a 2-3 "look" by placing the 1 and 3 on the left side because most players are right handed and that is the side of the court a majority of shots come from. The 2 and 4 are placed on the right because of their size and offensive rebounding ability. The 5 is always between the ball and the basket. This defense is built around the "point"/"hole" philosophy, which means that there is always a defender on the ball (point) and one defending the basket (hole). The off-the-ball defenders are all responsible for an offensive player, this is why it is a great rebounding zone defense. Hewitt also demonstrates how to guard different situations such as: ball in high post, dribble rotation, cuts, on and off ball screens, and penetration. The "Point Zone Defense," is perfect for any team because it is easy to install, has basic and simple principles, allows for a defender to be in the face of the offensive player at all times, assigns box out responsibilities to each player, prevents easy baskets from baseline out-of-bounds situations and will break up a team's offensive rhythm!

with Paul Hewitt,
Georgia Tech Head Coach, 2004 NCAA Runner-Up

Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Hewitt has discovered a style of basketball that has led his teams to scoring averages of more than 80 points a game and a trip to the 2004 NCAA Championship game. Finally, Hewitt gives you a first hand look at his explosive transition game and how it flows into the 4-out 1-in motion offense. "Run to score!" is the first point Hewitt makes as he demonstrates the lanes and spacing of each player. He lets you in on all of his essentials and secrets for beating the defense down court and creating easy baskets. To compliment his transition offense, Hewitt demonstrates three unique drills that work on the shots you will get out of transition, running the proper lanes and spacing. These drills are also great for conditioning and getting your team into the habit of running the floor every possession. If nothing comes from transition, the players are already in position to run Hewitt's "high octane" 4-out 1-in motion offense. To show how to run his offense, Hewitt starts building it from 3-on-0 showing: how to screen, cut and dribble handoff to create easy scoring opportunities. To implant continuity and floor balance, he offers a 3 on 0 drill that requires three passes to create a shot. He also demonstrates an effective 3-on-3 drill that demonstrates to players that a good screen will open up good shots. This is a fantastic offense that teaches your player's to do all the work before they get the ball!

Georgia Tech Head Coach

Coach Hewitt calls individual instruction "the most important part of coaching." Whether players aspire to be a good high school player, be recruited by a college or even to go on to play in the NBA, it's a coach's obligation to keeping pushing them to improve. Hewitt lays out the foundation of his instruction program that has been so successful at Georgia Tech. He begins with a warm-up segment that includes full-court dribble, two-man passing, three-man weave and defender chase drill. Passing and cutting comprises the next phase. The pass and cut drill makes players be active with the ball and skills are developed without using the dribble. Catching on a one-two count is taught in detail and is seen in the catch and shot fake drill. Other offensive breakdown drills include 4 out/1 in drill and diamond passing. Hewitt takes a unique approach to half court offense. He concentrates on filling spots on the floor and reacting to basketball penetration. In the half court area, Hewitt demonstrates where shots come from, how players react to driving to the basket and catch preparation. Special attention is given to ball reversal, baseline drive and middle drive. Hewitt also shows the screening series on the elbow and its many options within half court offense.
